Daffnet began as an email forum for the purpose of discussing a variety of subjects relating to our favorite flower - the daffodil. However, through the course of travel and the wide use of email, Daffnet has evolved into a caring and sharing Internet community.
Today, Daffnet has approximately 450 members representing 15 countries. Because Daffnet is a world-wide community representing many cultures, it is important to remember that the purpose of Daffnet is to share and exchange photos, experiences, information, advice, questions, and yes, fun stories about daffodils. However, because we are an international community, Daffnet is not a forum to exchange political or religious views and opinions.
You can help to keep Daffnet safe and secure by remembering the following:
- Sending Mail - When sending messages, send it only to Daffnet. Daffnet rejects email with over 3 email addresses as its software considers this a security risk! This may be why you think you have missed a message when you see a reply and did not see the original message.
- Who needs to know? - Ask yourself "Is this message really for all 370 members?" or would it be better to communicate directly with one or two people about a specific issue.
- Review your e-mail filters - If you have set-up filters, make sure they are set to 'delete' email rather than 'reject'. Some of us have used filters on our email for a long time, and now is a good time to check and update these accordingly.
- We are about Daffodils - Please try to keep on topic. Sometimes our messages to Daffnet have veered off subject and this could misidentify Daffnet as a spam source. It is fun, but unfortunately, in this time of 'spam-up-heaval', it does have its consequences.
- Difficulty Unsubscribing - Sometimes members wish to unsubscribe from Daffnet but cannot remember how, so they reject Daffnet messages instead. As you will read in the next issue, this has a negative effect on the Daffnet server. If you wish to no longer be a member of Daffnet, just send an email to daffman@daffodilusa.org and we will help you.
- Delete don't Reject - When you wish to remove a message, please use your 'Delete' key versus 'Reject'. When you reject email, it is returned back to the Daffnet server and requires additional effort to 'cleanup' the server. Also, rejected mail is interpreted by some Internet Providers, such as AOL, as spam and then the provider rejects all Daffnet messages. For you AOL members, your 'delete' and 'spam' buttons are right next to each other, so please use 'delete' to remove messages.
When composing a message for Daffnet, keep in mind that you must exhibit a higher degree of responsibility to send a message
to 450 people than you would need when composing a message to your family. We recommend,
you pause before sending your message to Daffnet and read it
out loud and think about it. While reading it, see if it is the content and
sentiment that you want to convey to all Daffnet members. Every person is
responsible and accountable for their words and actions and Daffnet is no
exception.
Daffnet has been used to offer help, express concern, or gather information about the welfare of our members during turbulent times. Based on over fifteen years of operation, these general guidelines have kept Daffnet a sharing, caring and helpful daffodil community.
